DESCRIPTION: Length 7 - 12mm. A typical yellow and black hoverfly with the key identifications features being the hairy eyes, the central black stripe on the face, the black elongated stigma, the downward facing oblique yellow bars on segments T2 - T4 and the grey stripes on the thorax. BEHAVIOUR: Both sexes visit flowers are can be found basking in the sun. DISTRIBUTION: Very common throughout Britain but becoming more infrequent in the far north. HABITAT: Gardens, woodlands and hedgerows. PERIOD: April to September in 2 generations.
